Harry, the chief agro technician at Getibogaine, explains the challenges involved in cultivating iboga. “Growing iboga is incredibly difficult. It requires a highly controlled environment. We had to use propagators to help the seeds sprout, which was a solution that emerged after several failed attempts outdoors,” he says. The company has taken numerous measures to ensure the plant’s survival, including using wood chips in the incubation process to facilitate easy transplantation once the plants reach 2 cm in height.
Once the seedlings are successfully transferred to polythene bags, they are moved to the plantation, where they will be allowed to grow for about ten years before they can be harvested. The slow maturation of the plant ensures that the best quality of ibogaine is extracted while also preserving the plant’s longevity for future generations.
