WINTER GARDEN, Florida — December 05, 2025 — Author and educator Robert J. Smith, MFA, and Ron Wallace, former President of UPS International, have announced a coordinated national effort designed to enhance literacy, civic understanding, and historical awareness among students and community groups across the United States.
The initiative aligns Smith’s youth-focused writing and communication programs with Wallace’s research on leadership behavior and civic engagement. Together, the two leaders aim to support schools, youth organizations, and community educators seeking practical tools to promote constructive dialogue and informed participation in civic life.
Smith, a former financial-services executive who shifted to educational work following major medical setbacks, has spent recent years developing writing and literacy curricula used in youth programs nationwide. His organization launched Junior Patriots, a nonprofit literacy initiative that guides students through research, writing, and project-based civic learning. The program provides structured resources for educators, mentorship support, and opportunities for students to publish work that reflects their understanding of community and national identity.

“Our work focuses on helping young people build confidence in expressing their ideas and understanding their role within their communities,” Smith said. “Writing and research skills provide students with an entry point into broader civic awareness.”
Wallace, who previously served in law enforcement and has chaired more than 30 civic boards, oversaw UPS International operations across more than 200 countries. His recent research explores cultural trends, workplace behavior, and leadership models shaping modern civic dialogue. “Strong societies depend on informed citizens and a willingness to engage respectfully,” Wallace said. “Education and leadership development play central roles in that process.”
Both Smith and Wallace have collaborated on community literacy events, educator workshops, and public discussions aimed at bridging generational and cultural divides. Their current initiative seeks to expand these efforts in a more structured national format. Early pilot engagements have taken place with youth organizations in Florida, Georgia, and Ohio, with additional states expected to join in 2026.
To support transparency, Junior Patriots operates as a nonprofit program with independent governance; funding is sourced through community partnerships, educational grants, and private contributions. The program’s materials are designed for nonpartisan use and focus on historical literacy, civic fundamentals, and communication skills.
“Students benefit when reading, writing, and civic understanding are taught together,” Smith added. “This initiative brings those elements into a single framework that educators can use immediately.”
