Despite turmoil in the global economy, the luxury yacht market is still projected to nearly double in size in the next 5 years, according to Global Market Insights. A 2024 report by Yacht Style goes even further, valuing the current super yacht market at over $33 billion USD. However, this growth obfuscates a shortcoming, one which Excel Performance Media suggests could stymie the market: a complete lack of marketing infrastructure for many companies now driving that growth.
Brokers Struggle With Exposure
Indeed, one broker, TBJ Super Yachts, reported that it takes, on average, 6 months to a year to secure a buyer for most new stock, due in large part to deficiencies in the marketing ecosystem.
Forbes explains this problem in greater detail, highlighting the unique challenges that arise when marketing to highly wealthy individuals. Not only, they claim, is it difficult to reach these individuals in the first place given their often-busy schedules and penchant for avoiding traditional social media channels, but the rise of the so-called “new billionaire”, individuals who built their fortunes from scratch, requires an entirely different type of outreach and framing for marketers looking to sell luxury goods.
Exploring Solutions
Excel Performance Media details their own strategy for targeting wealthy customers, which relies primarily on specificity and visibility. Ultra-luxury markets like super yacht sales are often narrow, with a limited amount of stock available at any given time, with most buyers entering the market already interested in a specific niche. With that in mind, marketers are developing new ways to ensure that yacht dealers can maintain an expansive digital presence, all in the interest of increasing organic traffic.
That same Forbes report also highlights the fact that digital marketing is only half the battle when marketing to the ultra-wealthy. It is contingent on businesses to establish a professional physical presence as well; the author shares an anecdote about a sales process that took over 14 months of near-daily interaction, which further corroborates the 12 month estimate shared by TBJ Super Yachts.
Standout Examples
Excel Performance Media also shared some examples of the companies currently successfully employing these strategies to great effect.
One example they shared was Lazzarini & Pickering Architetti, an Italian design studio that has gained massive notoriety in recent years for their commitment to maintaining a consistent design voice across not only their yacht-related projects, but their architecture projects as well.
Likewise, Daroca Designs has operated as a public manufacturer of ultra-luxury yachts for many years while also working with private clients. Their design language is intended to work in harmony with the ocean itself, the manufacturer explains, which is why they have been able to maintain a stellar reputation in the industry. Recently, the company completed the redesign and refit of the 80m REAL super yacht, a collaborative project that yielded truly extraordinary results.
BMComposites, on the other hand, has become an integral part of the yacht engineering process, and as such, warrants a mention as well. They are leading providers of carbon fiber structural design services, and heavily contributed to the redesign of the 73 m-long Coral Ocean, a vessel that went on to win the 2023 Boat International Superyacht Award thanks in large part to the modifications made by the company. Other recent projects include the Galateia, Polar Star, and M5, all excellent examples of how modern tools such as 3D scanning, off-site compositing, and custom CNC machining can be used to create stunning vessels that combine cutting-edge engineering with timeless elegance.
Finally, Excel Performance Media highlighted Coquine Design Studio, a project championed by Christopher Leyk with a strong focus on reviving and revitalizing the design trends of the past, while also leaving room for modern comforts. The latest example of this, the 60 m-long Hippolyta, arrives as a “modern classic”, blending a sleek, understated profile with a timeless, nostalgic aesthetic.
The common thread between all of the picks highlighted by Excel Performance Media, they explain, is a combination of robust marketing tactics and an unwavering commitment to quality that allows them to maintain a strong word-of-mouth presence as well.
By combining organic digital marketing efforts, patience, and professionalism, Excel Performance Media and others like them hope to be able to support the luxury yacht market as it continues to grow and evolve in the years to come.
