Something special is happening in Wichita, Kansas. Newman University, a Catholic institution with deep roots in the community, just welcomed its second-largest incoming class in school history—and the numbers tell a compelling story about what students and families are really looking for in higher education today.
With 405 new undergraduate students walking through campus doors this fall, Newman has achieved a remarkable 32% year-over-year increase that has administrators, faculty, and current students buzzing with excitement. But perhaps more impressive than the raw numbers is what they represent: a university that’s found its sweet spot between academic rigor and genuine community.
More Than Just Numbers
The breakdown of new students reveals something interesting about Newman’s appeal. The incoming class splits almost evenly between first-year students (200) and transfer students (205), suggesting the university is successfully attracting both traditional college-bound high schoolers and students seeking a fresh start or better fit for their educational journey.
“We’re not just growing – we’re growing with purpose, attracting students who are a good fit with Newman and who are ready to engage with our rigorous academic offerings and vibrant campus community,” explains Michael Probus, Vice President for Enrollment Management.
This intentional approach to growth speaks to a broader trend in higher education, where students are increasingly looking beyond name recognition and rankings to find institutions that truly align with their values and goals.
Bridging the Gap in Southwest Kansas
One of Newman’s most significant achievements this year has been its expansion into southwest Kansas, a region historically underserved by four-year institutions. The university added 43 new transfer students from communities like Garden City, Dodge City and Liberal—areas that Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Alden Stout describes as having been “higher-education deserts.”
This expansion isn’t just about increasing enrollment numbers; it’s about addressing real community needs. By bringing quality four-year programs to working professionals and traditional students in these communities, Newman is helping to break down geographic barriers that have long limited educational opportunities in rural Kansas.
“There is great need and it’s rewarding to see Newman’s partnerships and student population growing,” Stout notes, highlighting how the university is fulfilling its mission beyond the Wichita campus.
Deep Local Roots
While expanding its reach across Kansas, Newman hasn’t forgotten its local community. The university achieved historic success recruiting from Wichita’s Catholic high schools, with a record 41 students from Bishop Carroll and Kapaun Mt. Carmel choosing Newman for their college years.
This local success story reflects the strong relationships Newman has built within the Wichita community and its commitment to serving families who share its values. It also demonstrates how a university can maintain its identity and mission while growing strategically.
A Unique Seminary Program
Perhaps one of Newman’s most distinctive features is its partnership with the Diocese of Wichita. Newman University educates a growing number undergraduate seminarians mostly from Wichita but also the Dodge City, Salina diocese in Kansas and the Little Rock diocese in Arkansas. With a record 25 new seminarians enrolled this fall, Newman likely maintains one of the highest seminary enrollments in the country among institutions that combine seminary education with a full university experience.
This program exemplifies Newman’s commitment to its Catholic identity while providing a comprehensive educational experience that prepares future priests for ministry in the modern world.
Graduate Growth Continues
The enrollment surge isn’t limited to undergraduates. Newman’s graduate programs have also exceeded expectations, adding 145 new students—10% above the institution’s enrollment goal. This growth across all levels suggests that Newman is successfully meeting the needs of learners at different stages of their educational and professional journeys.
What This Means for Students
For current and prospective students, Newman’s growth represents opportunity. Larger enrollment can mean more resources, diverse perspectives in the classroom, and a more vibrant campus life. However, President Dr. Kathleen S. Jagger emphasizes that growth won’t come at the expense of the personal attention that defines the Newman experience.
“This enrollment growth allows us to enhance our programs while maintaining the personalized attention and welcoming family atmosphere that defines our university,” Jagger explains. “Our faculty are excited to work with, and mentor, this dynamic group of students who, along with our returners, bring fresh perspectives to our campus.”
A Model for Mission-Driven Growth
Newman’s enrollment success offers valuable insights for other institutions navigating the challenging higher education landscape. By staying true to its Catholic mission while innovatively serving underserved populations, the university has found a formula for sustainable growth.
The key seems to be authenticity—being clear about what you offer and who you serve, then delivering on those promises consistently. Newman’s growth isn’t about chasing trends or abandoning core values; it’s about finding new ways to live out an established mission.
“The enrollment milestone represents more than numbers. It represents the trust that students, families and communities place in us to deliver on our mission,” President Jagger reflects. “As we welcome these students into the Newman family, we’re reminded of our responsibility to provide transformative education experiences that prepare them for meaningful careers and lives of service and significance.”
Looking Ahead
As Newman finalizes its enrollment numbers on September 15 (census day), the university is already looking toward the future. This growth provides a strong foundation for enhancing programs, expanding community partnerships, and continuing to serve as a beacon of Catholic higher education in Kansas and beyond.
For a university founded on the principle of empowering graduates to transform society, these enrollment numbers represent more than institutional success—they represent potential for positive impact that extends far beyond campus boundaries.
The story of Newman’s growth is ultimately a story about meeting people where they are and helping them become who they’re called to be. In an era when higher education faces numerous challenges, that’s a mission worth celebrating.
