Among the careers made possible by the social media ecosystem, the content creation space offers by far the greatest level of opportunity, and the greatest potential for failure. As media outlet Blavity Inc. explains, content creation is a career that requires a wide range of skills, and, consequently, resources. However, for many entrepreneurs, AI tools are removing the barriers to entry that once kept content ecosystems like YouTube walled off for all but a select few.
Benny Yu is one among many creators currently taking advantage of new AI content development tools to democratize and expand the accessibility of video content creation and, in particular, the monetization thereof. Commenting on the rapid growth of this trend, Yu shares his techniques and in the process gets to the heart of the problems and opportunities present in the industry in 2025.
Content Without Identity
Yu and others like him are tapping into a recent trend known as the “faceless” channel, a content creation model first popularized on YouTube, but applicable to any platform. Faceless channels have been a part of the content ecosystem since the dawn of social media, but as many creators have been able to demonstrate, AI and the advent of automated content creation have now made the practice more profitable and more accessible.
Those familiar with YouTube and other content platforms may be surprised to learn just how effective these content models can be as both revenue generators and marketing tools. Video development company Descript shared their findings on the matter recently, explaining that faceless channels—specifically those powered by AI—are for the first time capable of earning a 6-figure income on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Likewise, businesses who use these tools stand to gain in both the reduction of their marketing budgets and the expansion of their reach onto new platforms.
Scaling Challenges
Faceless AI content can still require significant, sustained effort from creators, though, as Yu demonstrates, methods already exist to reduce this workload considerably. Creators use tools such as ChatGPT, Runway, and ElevenLabs to create the components of their videos, then assemble them using content studios such as CapCut.
Many of these solutions are available for free or for an affordable monthly subscription, making them an ideal choice for new creators and businesses. However, even with these tools, Yu cautions that one must still understand the content ecosystem and the audience to successfully monetize and scale them.
Finding An Audience
One of the most significant challenges standing in the way of success for most faceless creators, AI journalist Alex Paukin states, is the accessibility of the method itself. Now that virtually anyone can create a faceless channel, and now that everyone is using the same tools to do so, most of these channels struggle to stand out and find consistent viewership.
He explains that audiences are able to easily recognize low-effort AI content, and are extremely unlikely to watch if they feel their time is being wasted. This, he emphasizes, is a product not of the tools themselves, but of the lack of creativity required to use them.
Developing A Voice
To combat this problem, creators like Yu place an emphasis on editing for retention and leveraging the algorithm to maximize audience engagement. These two factors are extremely important, he says, in the development of a long-term content plan like the one that he uses to power his endeavors.
His channel is an example of a successful use of these tools—a faith-based content ecosystem, complete with merchandise and multiple channels. Other examples include “Top-10 List” channels—of which there are millions—and channels which post gaming highlights. Even the lauded “LoFi Girl” channel, which offers a long-running stream of free music, could be considered a faceless channel.
All of the above examples leverage popular YouTube trends, while also showcasing how AI can be deployed to automate content creation. By attaching one’s channel to a niche in this way, one may just be able to thread the needle to avoid the problems that Paukin cites, creating a viable side hustle in the process.
